Dog daycare, and the better option

🎾 What dog daycare is

With daycare, you drop your dog off in the morning — at a facility or a host’s home — and pick it up in the evening. The day usually mixes group play, rest periods, feeding and potty breaks, supervised by staff. It’s daytime-only: no overnight stay, and no outing. Whatever happens, happens inside the same room or yard.

That solves the basic problem — your dog isn’t home alone — and for a genuinely social dog who loves a crowd it can be a good day out. For a lot of dogs, though, it fixes the loneliness and leaves the energy untouched.

⚡ The bit daycare doesn’t solve

A young retriever, shepherd, doodle, husky or cattle dog isn’t only asking for company — they’re asking for a job and a horizon. Playroom bursts of chase and wrestle burn some of that off, but they’re stop-and-go, on flat ground, with long idle stretches between — and the same four walls every single day.

A busy room is also arousing. Noise, crowding and unpredictable dog-to-dog interactions keep the nervous system switched on for hours, which is why so many owners collect a dog that’s exhausted and wound up. Tired is easy. Settled is what you actually want at 7pm.

⛰️ What a hike day looks like instead

We pick your dog up right at your door and drive the pack to open space in Marin — and that driving is on top of the hike, not part of it. Your dog gets at least two hours of actual trail time and covers up to six miles — climbing fire roads, splashing through creeks, romping in meadows, sniffing everything worth sniffing. Off leash (preferred, but optional) or on, your choice, and every off-leash dog wears a Garmin Alpha 300 GPS tracker that works without cell service.

The pack is small, stable and hand-matched: the same friends week after week, with the same person leading them. Dogs relax into a group they know, and along the way we work on the basics — recall, check-ins, the pack’s rules. You get a photo from every adventure, and a dog who sleeps like a rock.

Hikes run on the weekdays you pick, in the mornings, from one day a week up — and that schedule repeats every week until you say otherwise.

🔎 If you do go the daycare route

Sometimes daycare is the right call — a very social dog, a facility you love, a schedule nothing else fits. If that’s you, vet it properly:

• Visit first and check it’s clean, secure and not overcrowded, with separate areas for small and large dogs.
• Ask about staff-to-dog ratios and how play groups are matched by size and temperament.
• Confirm vaccination requirements (rabies, DHPP, Bordetella) — for every dog there, not just yours.
• Check the rest policy — good daycares enforce quiet time; all-day play overcooks most dogs.
• Do a trial half-day and watch how your dog comes home: happily tired is good, stressed or shut down is not.
• Share routine, meds and emergency contacts — and your vet’s details.

🐾 Joining the pack

1. Pick “Group Hikes” as the service on the booking page.
2. Pick your weekdays (Mon–Fri, one day a week or more) — your pooch hikes those days every week, until you cancel.
3. Tell us about your dog — how many dogs, and whether they’re joining off leash (preferred, but optional).
4. Share contact details and send — you’ll see the exact price first, and we confirm personally.
5. Meet & greet — we come out in person before the first hike, so everyone knows it’s the right fit.

❓ Common questions

Do you offer daycare?

We don’t run a daycare facility — we run weekday group hikes, which cover what most people come to daycare for: the dog gets out, gets worked, and comes home content. Away overnight or longer? That’s in-home dog sitting.

My dog is alone on workdays — is a hike enough?

For most dogs a morning adventure on the trails reshapes the whole day: they come back full of exercise and sleep through the afternoon. See how long a dog can be left alone for the guidelines, and add hike days if your dog needs them.

My dog is shy in big groups — would hikes work?

Often better than daycare, yes. The pack is small and hand-matched, the same faces each week, and there’s a whole hillside to spread out on rather than a room with nowhere to go. The meet & greet is where we work out whether it’s a fit.

How much exercise does my dog actually need?

What about rainy days?

If public schools are open during a storm, we hike. If schools close for severe weather, we cancel that day and reschedule. Most dogs love the rain — just leave a couple of towels out at pickup so we can dry off muddy pups.
